Responsibilities – Clinical Fellows

The main priorities are:

Surgery and Patient Care

During the clinical year the Fellow will be the assistant to the Attending Physician during surgery. At UCSF, the Fellow will function as a Junior Consultant and guide the residents running the Sports Medicine Service while ensuring adequate communication with the Attending Physician. Fellows will be responsible for knowledge of and involvement with patient care on an ongoing basis. Daily patient rounds are coordinated with the residents.

Clinic

Fellows will work in the Sports Medicine Centers with the Sports Medicine Faculty. The fellow will be expected to take an active role in resident teaching. Time will be made available for the fellow to participate in the reconstructive shoulder service and knee service.

Research and Education

Projects

All Fellows are encouraged to participate in research. Clinical, basic science, and outcome studies are all currently in progress. The fellow may join in current research or pursue individual creative ideas. Other faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and other departments within the University, postdoctoral fellows residents, and medical students are all available for consultation. The Fellow is encouraged to start early in order to prepare abstracts for submission by March or early April. The first draft of the paper should be completed prior to the end of the Fellowship. The Fellow is given first authorship on these papers if he or she completes at least the first written draft prior to the conclusion of the Fellowship. If however, the Attending Physician has to complete the paper, or a major rewrite is needed, the Fellow will forgo the privilege of being first author.

Conferences

Fellows will be expected to attend and participate in the scheduled Conferences at UCSF, including sports medicine conference, interesting case conference, basic science conference, and grand rounds. There is also arthroplasty conference, radiology conference and journal clubs.

Teaching

Fellows have the responsibility for supervising and assisting the UCSF Orthopaedic Residents as necessary. They are expected to make rounds with them and teach and assist them in the day-to-day decision making process.

Travel

Fellows will be sent to (1) sports medicine conference during the fellowship with expenses paid.

Photography

There is support available for preparation of slides for presentations. However, slides taken for the Fellow’s personal archives should be the responsibility of the Fellow.

Benefits and Insurance Coverage

Fellows are eligible for health insurance benefits and should receive and complete the application within three days of your first day of work. Malpractice insurance is arranged through the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.
