Biography

Americ Alvarado, MA ATC has joined the UCSF Playsafe athletic training staff in the summer of 2009. He is also the current athletic trainer for the Redwood High School Giants. Before arriving at UCSF he brings years of experience from San Diego State University, University of San Diego, University of California San Diego, San Jose State University, and Stanford University. At San Diego State University, Americ, received his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training and at San Jose State University he received his Master’s degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis. Americ worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Stanford University from 2007-2009 where he won two national championships with men’s gymnastics and women?s crew.

Biography

Joe Caballero MSPT ATC has been with the UCSF PlaySafe program since it’s inception in 2001. He received his Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from UCLA in 2000 where he was a student athletic trainer for UCLA’s football, track and field and women’s tennis teams. Joe was certified in athletic training in 2001. He went on to obtain his Master’s of Science degree in Physical Therapy from UCSF/SFSU in 2003 Joe now works as a full-time staff Physical Therapist in acute care at San Francisco General Hospital and continues to work part-time with the Play Safe program as a certified Athletic Trainer. His interests lie in orthopedic trauma, sports medicine, performing arts, and working with under-served populations. Joe is the athletic trainer in charge at Mission High School during the Fall season.

Biography

Elise Hammond, ATC, EMT joined the UCSF PlaySafe athletic training staff in the fall of 2008. Prior to her arrival at UCSF, Elise served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at the University of California, Berkeley from 2005-2008, where she worked with football, women’s gymnastics, and track & field/cross country. In December of 2004, Elise received her Bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University in Exercise and Sport Science, with an emphasis in Athletic Training; she also completed minors in Psychology and Music. Elise is currently working towards her Masters in Kinesiology at California State University, East Bay. Elise is the athletic trainer in charge at Lincoln, Marshall, and O’Connell High Schools.

Biography

Derek Hirai, MS, ATC started in the summer of 2008 at the UCSF Sports Medicine clinic. Hirai also serves as the athletic trainer for one of the 12 High Schools affiliated with the UCSF PlaySafe Program. Prior to arriving at UCSF, Hirai worked as the athletic trainer for Indiana University’s Baseball team. Hirai completed his Masters of Science degree in Kinesiology from Indiana University’s Post-Certification Graduate Athletic Training Program and his Bachelors of Science degree in Exercise Science with an option in athletic training from Oregon State University. His interests include sports medicine research as it pertains to ankle instability and rehabilitation of the throwing athlete. Derek is the athletic trainer in charge at Galileo High School.

Biography

Duke Meek, ATC joined the UCSF PlaySafe athletic training staff in the summer of 2009. Prior to his arrival at UCSF, Duke worked as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Stanford University from 2007-2009, serving both football and the nationally ranked men?s volleyball team. Also, Duke has worked as an athletic trainer intern for the San Francisco 49ers from 2004-2006. In May of 2004, Duke received his Bachelor’s of Science degree from San Jose State University in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Athletic Training. Duke is currently working towards completing his Masters in Kinesiology at San Jose State University. Duke is also the athletic trainer in charge at Wallenberg, Marshall, and Washington High Schools.

Biography

Jason Miyamoto, MS ATC started in the fall of 2007 as the UCSF Playsafe program coordinator. Miyamoto is responsible for coordinating the Athletic Training Services and development of sports medicine facilities for all 12 High Schools in the San Francisco Unified School district. Prior to his arrival at UCSF, Miyamoto served as an assistant athletic trainer at the University of California, Berkeley from 2004-07, and as a graduate assistant athletic trainer for Cal from 2002-04. Jason received his Master’s degree in Kinesiology: Exercise Physiology from Cal State University, Hayward in 2004 and his Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology: Athletic Training in 2001 from Sonoma State University. Jason is the athletic trainer in charge at Burton, Jordan, and Lowell High Schools.
