Biography

Dr. Morshed received his bachelor's degree from Harvard University and completed both medical school and orthopaedic residency at the University of California San Francisco. As an Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellow, he received a Master's of Public Health and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California Berkeley. Prior to returning to UCSF to join the faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, he completed subspecialty clinical training in orthopaedic trauma at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Morshed is an attending orthopaedic trauma surgeon and Director of the Clinical Research Center at the UCSF/San Francisco General Hospital Orthopaedic Trauma Institute (OTI). His clinical practice is focused on skeletal trauma, surgery of the pelvis and acetabulum, and problem fractures including mal-unions and non-unions.

Research

Dr. Morshed's research expertise includes: clinical trial methodology, systematic review and meta-analysis, and evidence-based orthopaedics. His specific interests include the epidemiology of skeletal injury, and evaluation of interventions and technologies that improve the care of patients with fractures. Current Research Programs 1. Trial to Evaluate Ultrasound in Tibial Fractures (T.R.U.S.T.): Multicenter randomized controlled trial funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research and Industry to assess whether ultrasound can speed and improve healing of tibia fractures. 2. Fluid Irrigation Techniques in Patients with Open Fracture Wounds (F.L.O.W.): Multicenter randomized controlled trial funded by the Department of Defense and the Canadian Institutes for Health Research to assess the optimal acute care of open fractures to minimize late complications such as infection and reoperation. 3. A Multi-center, Randomized, Double blind, Placebo-controlled Study of AMG 785 in Skeletally Mature Adults with a Fresh Unilateral Tibial Diaphyseal Fracture Status Post Definitive Fracture Fixation with an Intramedullary Nail. This study is funded by AMGEN and investigates a novel agent that may speed and improve the quality of healing of tibia fractures 4. Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium (M.E.T.R.C). Funded by an unprecedented grant by the Department of Defense to study orthopaedic trauma problems with direct military relevance, the Clinical Research Center at the OTI has been selected as one of twelve core centers from around the United States to develop and implement clinical trials to study optimal management of limb trauma. Studies planned for implementation include: management of open long bone fractures with critical size bone defects, investigation of novel strategies for the detection and management of post-traumatic infections of bone, and study of the optimal limb salvage and amputations options for patients with limb-threatening injuries.
