Bio Mechanics Lab
Director: Jeff Lotz, PhD

The Orthopaedic Bio Mechanics Lab at the San Francisco General Hospital is currently being overseen by Jeff Lotz, PhD and has attracted internationally renowned researchers from various parts of the United States and the world. The lab conducts the highest quality research on clinically relevant basic research issues and serves as an educational resource for training postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, orthopaedic residents and medical students.

Surgical collaborators seeking answers to clinical questions that arise in the operating room are the catalysts for many of our projects. Our laboratory has extensive expertise in spinal biomechanics, with projects ranging from determining the optimal fusion methods to how the artificial replacement of an intervertebral disc affects the movement of the spine. The laboratory is also developing new methods for using a robotic arm to evaluate the motion of various joints. In addition, we have assembled a team of investigators from many different disciplines to determine how mechanical forces influence bone tissue healing and regeneration.
