Advances continue to be made in the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of traumatic musculoskeletal injuries. New operative techniques, such as minimally invasive surgery, have significantly improved patient outcomes by decreasing the time to healing and avoiding complications such as infections. Clinicians at the UCSF/SFGH Orthopaedic Trauma Center conduct clinical research, including collaborative studies with other major national and international trauma centers, aimed at improving on existing fracture treatments. In addition, they work side-by-side with basic researchers at the center to develop new treatments for problem fractures.

The major focus of the work performed in the Clinical Research Center is on treatments used in fracture repair. Non-union following bone fractures constitute an infrequent but potentially serious local complication. Despite the advances made in implant developments and biological fixation techniques, non-union continues to be a common post-traumatic complication. Many of our current clinical trials involve therapies such as OP-1 and rh-BMP-2 to treat delayed or non-union to help people that exhibit difficulties in bone healing.

The Center also provides training in clinical research for post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, orthopaedic residents, medical and undergraduate students.
