Walter Racette, CPO

Mr. Racette was born in Portland, Oregon and was raised on a dairy farm in the Willamette valley. He graduated with a bachelor of science in health education and physical education from the University of Oregon in 1970. He obtained his orthotic and prosthetic education from the University of Washington, receiving a bachelor of science in 1972. He completed his resident training and passed national certification in prosthetics in 1974 and orthotics in 1975.

Mr. Racette practiced in southern California and held titles including director of research and development, group operations manager, and vice president of professional services for Orthomedics Inc. He also served as clinical instructor at the University of Southern California, department of orthopaedics from 1978 thru 1989 working with Dr. Augusto Sarmiento MD at USC/LAC medical center where he co authored many articles and was responsible for the development of the prefabricated functional fracture brace for long bone fractures. He has been the Director of Orthotics and Prosthetics at UCSF with centers at the Parnassus, Mt Zion, and SFGH campuses since 1998. He is the resident director for the orthotic and prosthetic residency at UCSF.

Mr. Racette has served on several professional committees including the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics book of rules committee, a commissioner for the Educational Accreditation commission and a member of the 1990 Educational Task Force Committee. He has served on the board for the American Orthotic and Prosthetic Association and is currently the Vice President of that organization.
