Solon Rosenblatt was born in Ankara, Turkey where his parents were stationed with the U.S. Embassy. Solon was named after the ancient Lawmaker of Athens who died in 559 B.C.E. After returning to the States with his family, Solon lived in Texas, South Dakota and ultimately grew up in the central coast of California. After graduating from high school, Solon's family moved to Israel. Solon enlisted in the Israel Defense Force and became a member of the elite Paratrooper Brigade / Special Operations Unit. After seven years with the IDF, Solon returned to California to continue his education. While attending the University of California at San Diego, Dr. Rosenblatt used the knowledge he obtained during his military service to teach hundreds of students the exciting sport of skydiving. He participated in numerous skydiving championships over the next many years and has accumulated over 5,000 parachute jumps.
He graduated from UCSD with a degree in Engineering and Chemistry. Over the next several years he was awarded several patents for his work while researching implantable electronic devices with Beckman Scientific Instruments. It was during this time that he began to realize his real interest was in medicine. He received his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia in 1990. At the completion of his medical degree Dr. Rosenblatt joined the U.S. Army Special Operations Command (Airborne) as a medical officer. In 1996, during his residency training, Dr. Rosenblatt was called upon to support Operation Southern Watch in Bosnia.
He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Phoenix Orthopaedic Residency Program. During his residency, he spent nearly a year at the world-renowned Rancho Los Amigos / USC Medical Center. After finishing an orthopaedic foot and ankle fellowship at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 1998, he moved to northern California to join the San Rafael / Kaiser Permanente Medical Center.
In August of 1999 a large earthquake struck the province of Izmit, Turkey. Dr. Rosenblatt's Forward Surgical Team was on site within a few days providing invaluable medical care in support of Operation Avid Response.
On September 11, 2001 a horrific event that Dr. Rosenblatt had become all too familiar with while living in Israel, occurred with the simultaneous attacks on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in our nation's capitol. Soon after, Dr. Rosenblatt's Forward Surgical Team was called upon once again to go to Kandahar, Afghanistan in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and Noble Eagle. During the next year, he and his team provided invaluable orthopaedic care to the U.S. and allied forces as well as the local populations of Afghanistan, Kuwait and Djibouti.
In 2004, Dr. Rosenblatt joined the faculty at UCSF with a part-time clinical position at San Francisco General Hospital. He enjoys orthopaedic trauma as well as concentrating his efforts on resident education and program development.
