Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship

Since the time of the first emergency room in Northern California, SFGH has been a leader in orthopaedic trauma care. We are proud of our rich history of trauma care, which includes the first complete trauma system in the United States and the site for the first meeting to found the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. Our trauma program is organized to provide care 24 hours a day, seven days a week, utilizing pre-hospital, hospital, and post-hospital care. SFGH continues to strive toward excellence in orthopaedic trauma care.

The primary purpose of the fellowship is to develop future leaders in the field of Orthopaedic Trauma. Graduates will possess expertise in the management of all aspects of care for the multiply injured patient, and will be positioned to enter either academic orthopaedic traumatology or high volume practices at Level 1 Trauma Centers. The fellow will interact with fellowship trained attending physicians in trauma, spine, foot and ankle, and upper extremity. The fellow will be part of a team that includes residents from the UCSF program, one of the premier residencies in the U.S., and will be an integral part of their education. There are multiple didactic and hands-on learning experiences for the fellow throughout each week.

The UCSF trauma fellowship is one of the only trauma fellowships with both a well-rounded clinical and basic science curriculum. During the one-year fellowship, the participant is required to finish at least one publishable-quality project in either clinical or basic research. The Division has a high-caliber orthopaedic research laboratory with full-time PhDs in biomechanics and molecular biology, as well as a clinical research coordinator.
