Biography

Masato Nagao was born and grew up in Muroran, Japan. He received his medical degree from Sapporo Medical University in 1982. He subsequently attended both graduate school and orthopedic residency training at Sapporo Medical University. He was awarded his Ph.D. degree with the thesis of "Studies on Lipid Metabolism in Articular Cartilage" in 1986 and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery in 1989.

In 1989, Dr. Nagao was appointed to the faculty in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Sapporo Medical University as the Chief of Hip and Arthritis Surgery Services. During this period, he performed surgeries, trained residents and presented and published papers nationally and internationally.

In 1996, he moved to Baltimore, Maryland for biomechanical research in the Orthopedic Biomechanics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. He was involved in several research projects, which resulted in publications in internationally recognized journals. After conducting biomechanical research, he received an appointment as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Johns Hopkins University from 1999 to 2000. Thereafter, he completed an orthopedic surgical fellowship at the Center for Joint Preservation and Replacement at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore in 2001.

After his long clinical and academic career in orthopedic surgery, Dr. Nagao changed his specialty and completed his residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) at Albany Medical Center, New York. During his residency in PM&R, Dr. Nagao continued collaborating in clinical research with medical centers in Japan, presenting at both national and international meetings and publishing papers. He was an invited lecturer at Sapporo Medical University in 2003. He also served as a Chief Resident from 2004 to 2005.

In 2005, Dr. Nagao joined the faculty of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) as a physiatrist (specializing in PM&R). He is primarily based at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH), where his clinical areas of interest are musculoskeletal rehabilitation, electrodiagnosis (electromyography and nerve conduction study), and interventional treatments including spinal injections, nerve blocks and botulinum toxin injections.

Dr. Nagao's goal is to provide the highest quality and compassionate medical care for patients who sustain traumatic, musculoskeletal and neurological diseases. In addition, he plans to continue to maintain active involvement in education and research.
