Biography
Dr. Morshed received his bachelor's degree from Harvard University and completed both medical school and orthopaedic residency at the University of California San Francisco. As an Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation Clinical Research Training Fellow, he received a Master's of Public Health and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California Berkeley. Prior to returning to UCSF to join the faculty in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, he completed subspecialty clinical training in orthopaedic trauma at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. Dr. Morshed is an attending orthopaedic trauma surgeon and Director of the Clinical Research Center at the UCSF/San Francisco General Hospital Orthopaedic Trauma Institute (OTI). His clinical practice is focused on skeletal trauma, surgery of the pelvis and acetabulum, and problem fractures including mal-unions and non-unions.Career

Research
In 2009 I joined the faculty of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF. The Orthopaedic Trauma Institute (OTI) opened at San Francisco General Hospital in February of 2009 where I am primarily based. I was recruited to lead the clinical research program that I helped start in 2004 as a resident in the department. Between completion of residency and my return to UCSF, I completed a doctoral degree in epidemiology at UC Berkeley and an orthopaedic trauma fellowship. This training provided me with the tools with which to build a robust clinical research programs focusing on musculoskeletal injury.
As Director of the Clinical Research Center (CRC) at the OTI, I have hired a research manager and research assistant and implemented guidelines for the initiation and conduct of orthopaedic clinical research at SFGH and the OTI. The guidelines prioritize hypothesis driven research funded through extramural sources and collaboration on multicenter collaborations of high scientific merit. The objective of the CRC is to create knowledge through the conduct of original investigations and to educate students, residents, and faculty on best practices in clinical research.
Having developed a system for managing the affairs of our clinical research endeavors at SFGH, I am now focused on establishing a platform for my own clinical research interests involving limb salvage, infection and arthritis after surgical treatment of skeletal injuries. As a Steering Committee member of the Major Extremity Trauma Research Consortium (METRC), I have taken on leadership roles on several protocol committees as well as the Data Standards committee. By aligning my research group’s efforts with those of the METRC, I will leverage the organization as a Principal Investigator on the next major METRC R01 submission to the NIH. This will be submitted for Fall of 2012, and will be a study to develop valid and reliable prosthetic assessments for trauma research subjects undergoing amputation.
At UCSF, I have reached out to collaborate with my colleagues in radiology to develop quantitative magnetic resonance imaging techniques as a biomarker for early post-traumatic arthritis (PTOA) detection. A Pilot Grant for Junior Investigators has funded this initiative through the UCSF Resource Allocation Program to study how detection of biochemical changes in traumatized cartilage and subchondral bone may help predict PTOA years before it is clinically evident. I am also working closely with Hospital epidemiology and colleagues in the Division of Infectious Diseases at SFGH to investigate a program for screening and treatment of Staphylococcus aureus colonization in orthopaedic trauma patients. In addition to two full time research staff, I am in my second year of successfully funding medical student researchers (1 to 2 per year) to spend a year working in my lab on the aforementioned projects through grants from the UCSF Clinical and Translation Research Fellowship.
The final aspect of my research program involves a component of research training and academic capacity building in low-income nations. In addition to teaching or leading over ten international research training courses in three years, I have partnered the CRC with the Institute for Global Orthopaedics and Traumatology (also at the OTI) and collaborators in the Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania, to study the impact of plating versus nailing for femoral shaft fracture. In this setting we are training local investigators in clinical trial design and conduct, as well as implementing the latest technique in electronic data capture. As increasing rates of road traffic accidents are leading to an epidemic of skeletal trauma globally, the CRC at the OTI will continue to be a resource and active partner in facilitating high quality, locally relevant research.
