Safa Herfat, Ph.D.

Dr. Herfat joined the UCSF/SFGH Biomechanical Testing Facility in February of 2012.  He is responsible for developing, planning and executing research projects through industry partnerships.  His research expertise is in the biomechanical testing of joints and musculoskeletal tissues to evaluate orthopaedic medical devices and surgical procedures.  Safa completed his B.S. and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Cincinnati with a research focus in orthopaedic biomechanics.  His Ph.D. research focused on characterizing knee function by performing in vivo biomechanical analysis of a preclinical surrogate and using robotics to measure 3D joint loads.  Safa also served as a National Science Foundation GK-12 Fellow during his graduate studies.  His interests also include medical device innovation and tissue engineering.
