The Sports Medicine Club is up and running at LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL. Students work directly with UCSF Sports Medicine staff to learn sports medicine skills and gain experience in this exciting field.
During their monthly lunchtime educational sessions, students get the basics from doctors and athletic trainers on topics such as anatomy, common injuries, and the different facets of the healthcare system.
In addition to the lunchtime meetings, students attend a monthly after-school shadowing session where they develop mad taping and injury evaluation skills with one-on-one interaction with a certified athletic trainer. During these smaller sessions, the students delve deeper into the complex, but glamorous world of sports medicine.
This truly provides a unique experience for students interested in the field of sports medicine and you can look for the club to expand to other schools in the near future!
In this month's lunchtime meeting, the sports medicine club at Lincoln was privileged to hear from Dr. Benjamin Ma, an orthopedic surgeon at UCSF. Dr. Ma talked about common shoulder injuries and some of the surgical procedures he uses in the operating room. It was a great opportunity for the students in attendance at the meeting!
