Athletic Trainers

ATCs at the UCSF Orthopaedic Institute

Certified Athletic Trainers take on several different roles at the UCSF Orthopaedic Institute.  Without your traditional athletic department, training room, or physical clinic duties, our ATCs daily responsibilities and contributions are listed below.  The combination of physician extender clinical duties mixed with secondary school sports medicine coverage is what makes our positions unique.

Clinical Physician Extenders

The athletic trainers provide a multitude of duties as physician extenders, due to their knowledge base in medicine and specifically orthopaedics, but also due to their work ethic and jack of all trades mentality.  The duties of the physician extenders include:

  • Initial medical history intake
  • Home exercise prescription and education
  • Acute injury management
  • Pre and post-operative education
  • Suture removal, dressing wounds
  • Casting/splinting
  • Managing clinic flow
  • Assisting physicians with in-office procedures
  • Triaging patient questions and requests
  • Brace fitting
  • Other duties to manage clinic flow and efficiency
