Biography

R. Trigg McClellan was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan however grew up in Nashville, Tennessee where he attended Montgomery Bell Academy, recognized as one of the finest college preparatory schools in the country. He graduated with honors from Vanderbilt University in 1976 with a B.S. in Physics and received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1981. After two years of general surgery residency at Vanderbilt, he completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Michigan in 1986. Dr. McClellan received advanced fellowship training in Orthopaedic Traumatology at San Francisco General Hospital from 1986-1987. After one year in private practice in Nashville, Dr. McClellan joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University as Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. He was also the Chief of the Orthopaedic Surgery Department at Nashville General Hospital from 1988-1989. During his tenure at Vanderbilt Dr. McClellan had the opportunity to work closely with the late Dr. Ken Johnson considered to be a leading authority in orthopaedic traumatology. In 1989, Dr. McClellan joined the faculty at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California with a clinical appointment at Stanford University as Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. At Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, Dr. McClellan served as the Director of Orthopaedic Trauma and was a consultant to the Spinal Cord Injury Unit of the Norman B. Nelson Rehabilitation Center. With a growing interest in spinal surgery, Dr. McClellan completed a spine fellowship from 1997-1998 at the prestigious Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, California. In 2001, he returned to Nashville and joined a large orthopaedic private practice group.

In 2004, Dr. McClellan was recruited to the faculty of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, (UCSF) as an orthopaedic traumatologist and spine surgeon at San Francisco General Hospital, (SFGH). He received an appointment as Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at UCSF and is one of a handful of orthopaedic surgeons in the U.S. to have completed fellowships in both trauma and spine surgery. His clinical interests include acute and reconstructive trauma surgery, minimally invasive fracture surgery, and the surgical treatment of spinal trauma, tumors and infections. During his career, Dr. McClellan has traveled to Paris, France where he has studied under the late Professor Emile Letournel and to Davos, Switzerland where he has taken advanced training in fracture surgery. From 1996-2000, Dr. McClellan served as a Medical Director of Norian Corporation and was instrumental in the development and clinical application of bone cements in fracture surgery. In addition, he has co-developed a number of orthopaedic implants with pending patents that will greatly simplify complex surgical procedures.
