Laboratory for Orthopaedic Bioengineering

Overall Focus

The University of California at San Francisco Laboratory for Orthopaedic Bioengineering is directed by Jeffrey C. Lotz, Ph.D. The laboratory is located within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and devoted to conducting basic research in several areas of orthopaedics, including the biomechanics of the spine, intervertebral disc, and the hand. The research team is a diverse combination of biomechanical engineers, biologists, and orthopaedic surgeons.

The University of California at San Francisco Orthopaedic Bioengineering Laboratory is directed by Jeffrey C. Lotz, Ph.D. The laboratory is located within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery (Parnassus campus) and is devoted to conducting basic research in several areas of orthopaedics, including the spine, orthopaedic implant, joint, and tissue biomechanics. The research team is a diverse combination of biomechanical engineers, biologists, and orthopaedic surgeons.

Capabilities

    • Biomechanics: uni- and multi-axial testing (macro [MTS] & micro [Bose]), material property characterization, failure analysis, internal stress analysis, three-dimensional motion tracking, tissue permeability, and in situ mechanical testing (BioDent 1000)
    • Medical Imaging: DXA scanning, planar x-ray analysis, fluoroscopy (device insertion & during mechanical loading), quantitative computed tomography, and magnetic resonance images.
