OTI Hosts Outreach Program for Young Women

This summer, the Orthopaedic Trauma Institute will be hosting the Perry
Program for Women in Orthopaedics and Engineering. This exciting program is designed to encourage young women to pursue careers in science, particularly orthopaedic surgery and mechanical engineering, which are two fields in which women are traditionally underrepresented.

Fifteen freshmen and sophomore-year high school women have been selected by their guidance counselors for the program from 3-5 Bay Area public schools. These young women will participate in four day-long workshops at the UCSF/SFGH Orthopaedic Trauma Institute starting July 11th. These workshops will consist of hands-on research activities focused on orthopaedic surgery and biomechanics. Practicing women surgeons and engineers will work one-on-one with the program participants during these workshops, and participants will attend daily lectures by women leaders in both fields that will address the technical and interpersonal skills necessary for women to have successful careers in science or medicine.

Faculty organizers for the program are Drs. Lisa Lattanza (UCSF Orthopaedic Surgery) and Jenni Buckley (Research Director, Biomechanical Testing Facility). Participating schools include June Jordan School for Equity (San Francisco, CA), Acalanes High School (Lafayette, CA), and Milpitas High School (Milpitas, CA).
